Custom Website or Template? A Sourced Guide for Gold Coast Tradies

Jerrell Niu · 23 October 2026 · 16 min read

Most Gold Coast tradies don't need a fully custom website, because a well-built customised template does the job for a sole trader or small crew, and a custom build only earns its cost when your business needs something a template can't do.

We design and build custom websites for Gold Coast trades as well as customised templates, so this guide sets out when each one fits, using Business Queensland's framework and Google's own documentation rather than a sales pitch.

Key Points

  • Business Queensland sets out three ways to build a business website: a DIY template builder, a CMS-built custom site and hiring a developer.
  • Google's Core Web Vitals targets are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1, and nothing in Google's documentation says you need a custom build to meet them.
  • Google uses Core Web Vitals in its ranking systems, but good scores do not guarantee top rankings, so custom code alone won't put you first for 'plumber Gold Coast'.
  • Business Queensland warns that template content can be hard to export later and that hiring a developer often brings ongoing maintenance and post-launch edit charges, so both options carry real downsides.
  • Business Queensland advises owning your domain name separately from your builder or host, which is what keeps you free to change websites later.
  • After we redesigned the GC Connected Homes website, the business saw a 175 per cent increase in phone calls and visits from Google.

What's the difference between a template, a customised template and a custom build?

A template is a ready-made design you fill with your own words and photos, while a custom build is a design made from scratch for your business by a web designer.

business.gov.au's guide to setting up a business website lists exactly those design choices: a built-in template, a bought or free template, or a custom design from a web designer.

Business Queensland's guide to building and managing a website sets out three build options: a template builder you run yourself, a CMS-built custom site you do yourself or have done for you, and hiring a developer.

Cloud-based builders such as Wix and Squarespace are subscription services with templates and built-in hosting. A self-hosted CMS such as WordPress is more flexible and customisable, but it takes more work to maintain.

The middle path is the one most tradies miss. A customised template starts from a proven layout, then a designer sets it up properly with your branding, your services, your suburbs and your photos.

Knowing which of the three you're being quoted for lets you compare designers like for like.

When is a template completely fine?

A template is completely fine when you're a sole trader or small crew with a handful of services, and most of your work comes from referrals and repeat customers.

In that position, your site's job is to confirm you're real, show your work and make it easy to call. A well-set-up template does all three.

  • You offer one trade and a short list of services, so a few well-written pages cover everything a customer wants to know.
  • You can't yet supply many real job photos or reviews, so a bigger site would sit mostly empty.
  • You want to update photos, services and service areas yourself, which Business Queensland recommends learning to do.
  • Your budget is better spent this year on the van, the tools or your Google Business Profile.

When does a growing multi-crew business need more than a template?

A growing business with several crews, several services and a wide service area usually outgrows a basic template first, and a customised template is often the right next step.

The signs are practical. You need a page for each service, room to show work across many suburbs, and logins for several staff who update the site.

A fully custom build earns its cost when you need something no template does well, such as a quote calculator built around your pricing or a connection to your job management software.

Custom has real downsides that agency sales pages rarely mention. Business Queensland notes that hiring a developer can be expensive and that ongoing maintenance and post-launch edit charges often apply.

Choose custom for a feature you can name, not for a feeling, and you'll avoid paying for flexibility you never use.

Do I need a website at all if my work comes from referrals and Facebook?

Yes, you still need a website if your work comes from referrals and Facebook, even if it's a simple one.

Referred customers often look you up before they call, and a Facebook page is space you rent rather than own. We explain why in do you need a website if you have Facebook.

Google's search results and AI answers draw on indexed web pages, so a business with no site of its own has fewer ways to be found or mentioned.

A simple template site gives every referral somewhere to land that you control.

Do AI site builders like Wix AI, Squarespace AI or Lovable count as templates?

AI site builders inside Wix and Squarespace are still template builders, because the AI sets up a layout on the same subscription platform with built-in hosting.

Tools that generate code from a prompt, such as Lovable, sit closer to a custom build. That raises the same questions any custom site does: who hosts the code, who can edit it safely, and who fixes it when something breaks.

Fast setup is the real advantage. The weak spots are the ones Business Queensland lists for templates, including similar-looking sites and content that can be hard to move later.

Treat an AI builder as a quick way to get a draft, then judge the result against the same checklist as any other site.

What does each option cost up front and over three years?

What each option costs depends on your scope, so we don't publish build prices in articles. The free quote at the end of this page gives you a written figure for your business.

What we can show you is what you pay for, because that's where the three options really differ over three years.

To compare quotes fairly, add up three years of subscription or hosting, domain renewals, maintenance and the edits you expect to ask for, not just the build fee.

Our quotes are in Australian dollars and exclusive of GST, so GST is added on top. Your accountant can tell you whether your business can claim it back.

Comparing the three-year total stops a cheap build turning into an expensive site.

Who owns the domain, the content and the code?

You should own your domain name outright, in your business's name, and Business Queensland advises keeping it separate from your website builder or host.

Business Queensland names .com.au as the most common domain choice, and it requires an ABN.

Content means your words and photos, and code means the site itself. On a template builder the site lives on the platform's system, while on a self-hosted build you can own the files as well, if your contract says so.

Before you sign, confirm these points in writing.

  • Ask whose name and account the domain is registered under, and make sure the answer is yours.
  • Ask for admin logins to the website, hosting and domain, not just an editor account.
  • Ask whether you can take the site's files and content with you if you leave.
  • Ask who owns the Google Business Profile and analytics accounts connected to the site.
  • Hold the keys yourself, and you can change designers without starting from zero.

Can I move off Wix or Squarespace later without losing my site?

Yes, you can move off Wix or Squarespace later, but expect to rebuild the design on the new platform rather than copy it across.

Business Queensland lists difficulty exporting content as a template drawback, so plan on moving your words and photos page by page.

Trigahex, a colour-matching card game made in Queensland, sold through a Wix store that wasn't getting the attention and traffic it deserved. We moved the store to Shopify, created a design system from the game's existing brand and rebuilt the homepage and product page to sell.

Erica Wheeler wrote in her Google review after the build: "I started with a sales goal to reach within 6 months and we smashed those numbers in just a few weeks."

Because the business kept its own web address, a move like this doesn't mean starting again. Redirecting each old page address to its new home protects the Google visibility you've already built.

Starting on a template doesn't lock you in, as long as you own the domain.

Does a custom site rank better on Google for 'plumber Gold Coast'?

No, a custom site doesn't rank better for 'plumber Gold Coast' just because it's custom, and nothing in Google's documentation says it does.

Google's page experience guidance says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, but good scores do not guarantee top rankings.

The same guidance says other page experience aspects don't directly help ranking, and there is no single 'page experience signal'.

Google says page experience matters most where lots of helpful content exists for a query. Busy local searches like 'electrician Gold Coast' fit that description, so a fast, clear site can help you stand out from competitors with similar pages.

A customised template that answers what the customer searched and loads quickly can compete with custom code on those terms.

Spend your money on helpful pages and real proof, and you're investing in what Google says it rewards.

Does site speed matter, and what are the targets?

Yes, site speed matters, and Google publishes the targets.

Google's Core Web Vitals documentation measures loading, interactivity and visual stability, and Google highly recommends achieving good scores.

A bloated custom site can fail these targets and a lean template can pass them, so test the site you have rather than assuming. Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool shows your scores.

Hit all three targets, and you've removed one reason for a customer on a phone to give up and call someone else.

Google's Core Web Vitals targets

MetricWhat it measuresGoogle's target
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)LoadingWithin 2.5 seconds
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)InteractivityUnder 200 milliseconds
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)Visual stabilityUnder 0.1

Does a site need to be custom to show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

No, a site doesn't need to be custom to show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews.

We treat being cited by AI as SEO with better-structured answers, not a separate product. Our working rule is that a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google with a snippet, and ranking well still governs whether it gets picked.

The answer also has to sit in visible text, high on the page, rather than inside an image. Our guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT covers what's documented and what isn't.

None of that depends on custom code. A customised template with one clear page per service gives AI systems more to retrieve than one long page that mentions everything.

Build pages that answer real customer questions, and you're working towards Google and ChatGPT at the same time.

What does a Gold Coast tradie website actually need?

A Gold Coast tradie website needs to make calling you easy, prove you're licensed and show real work, whichever way it's built.

GC Connected Homes, a Gold Coast smart home installer and computer repairer, had 32 Google reviews, every one of them five stars, and almost none of that reputation was reaching people searching online.

We designed a site that showcases both sides of the business, with new service and location pages. The result was a 175 per cent increase in phone calls and visits from Google.

Alex wrote in his review that the new site "conveys the exact message we want to share with our customers, making it easier for them to understand who we are and what we offer."

Get these basics right, and your site does the job a customer needs, whatever platform it's on.

  • Add a click-to-call button. Put your phone number at the top of every page so a customer on a job site can tap it with one thumb.
  • Show your licence numbers. List them in the footer and on your about page so customers can check you before they book.
  • Name your service areas. List the suburbs you actually work in so customers know you'll come to them.
  • Feature your Google reviews. Quote them word for word with the reviewer's name, because an edited review undermines the trust it's meant to build.
  • Add real before-and-after photos. Take real photos of the van, the team and the finished job, because they convince a visitor far more than stock photos.
  • Keep the quote form short. Ask only for name, phone, suburb and the job so it's quick to fill in on a phone.

How do I show the suburbs I cover without spamming suburb pages?

Show the suburbs you cover in one service area section, and create a dedicated page only for areas where you have real jobs, photos and reviews to show.

A Gold Coast trade might work from Coomera to Coolangatta and across the Tweed border into NSW. Dozens of near-identical suburb pages with only the name swapped give the customer nothing new.

A Southport page earns its place when it shows a Southport job, a Southport review and how you get there.

Fewer, genuine area pages give customers a reason to call and give Google a page worth ranking.

How does the website connect to my Google Business Profile?

Your website and Google Business Profile should back each other up, so link the profile to your site and keep your business name, phone number and service areas identical on both.

In our process, a complete profile is the main route for your local details to reach Google Maps and Google's AI answers, so it matters as much as the site itself.

Our guide to Google Business Profile optimisation for QLD trades walks through the setup step by step.

When both match, customers who find you on Maps land on a site that confirms you're the right call.

How long does a build take, and how much of my time does it need?

How long a build takes depends mostly on the option you choose and how quickly your content comes together, and a template can go live far sooner than a custom design.

Your time goes into supplying photos, licence details and your list of services and suburbs, answering questions about how you work, and approving drafts.

Business Queensland advises learning how to update content yourself, so ask your designer for a handover walkthrough before launch.

Gather your job photos and reviews before you start, and the build moves at the speed of your decisions rather than waiting on content.

Will a rebuild lose my current Google rankings?

A rebuild can lose rankings if pages that already rank disappear or change address without a redirect, but a planned rebuild keeps them.

Before launch, list every page that brings in visits, keep or improve its content, and redirect each old address to its new one.

business.gov.au advises testing a site before launch and measuring it afterwards, which is how you catch a missing page before customers notice.

It also lists branding, usability, mobile and accessibility as design considerations, so test the new site on your own phone before it replaces the old one.

Plan the move properly, and a new site keeps the visibility you've already earned.

How do I tell whether my current site is failing me?

Your current site is failing you if it loads slowly on a phone, you can't update it yourself, or it no longer matches the work you do.

Our list of red flags that mean it's time to redesign your website goes into each one in more detail.

Spot these early, and you can fix the site before it costs you jobs.

  • It misses Google's Core Web Vitals targets when you test it in PageSpeed Insights.
  • You can't add a new service or suburb page without paying someone or breaking the layout.
  • It looks like every other template site in your trade, which Business Queensland lists as a template drawback.
  • Your phone number, licence details or photos are out of date.
  • You don't know who holds the domain or the logins.

What should I ask a Gold Coast web designer before signing?

Ask these questions before you sign with any Gold Coast web designer, including us.

A designer who answers all of them clearly is one you can trust with the page your phone calls come from.

  • Is this a template builder, a customised template or a fully custom build, and why is that right for my business?
  • Will the domain, hosting and website accounts be in my name, with admin access for me?
  • What will I pay each month and each year after launch, and what do edits cost?
  • Can I update text, photos and service areas myself, and will you show me how?
  • How will you protect my current Google rankings during the switch?
  • Will the site meet Google's Core Web Vitals targets on mobile, and how will you show me?
  • If we part ways, what can I take with me?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a custom website better for SEO than a template? No, a custom website isn't better for SEO just because it's custom. Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems but good scores don't guarantee top rankings, and there is no single page experience signal, so a fast, helpful customised template can compete with custom code.

Do I own my website if it's built on Wix or Squarespace? You can own your domain and your words and photos, but the site itself runs on the builder's subscription platform. Business Queensland advises owning your domain separately from your builder or host and lists difficulty exporting content as a template drawback, so keep your own copies.

Do I pay GST on website design? Yes, our quotes are in Australian dollars and exclusive of GST, so GST is added on top. Your accountant can confirm whether your business can claim it back.

How fast should a tradie website load? Aim for Google's Core Web Vitals targets: LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1. Google highly recommends good scores, and a lean template can pass them just as a custom site can.

Can a template website show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews? Yes, a template website can show up in AI answers. We treat AI visibility as SEO with better-structured answers, so the page needs to be indexed, rank well and answer the question in visible text, and none of that needs custom code.

Should a sole trader get a custom website? Usually not, because a template or customised template covers a sole trader with a short list of services. Business Queensland notes that hiring a developer can be expensive and often brings ongoing maintenance and edit charges, so custom is worth it only when you need a feature a template can't do.
