My career started a long way from websites. I have worked as a doorman and a club manager in Sydney's nightlife, as a Cardiac Care Specialist in a leading private hospital, and in finance at ANZ Bank. I started a security business and ran it for six years. I have also worked in commercial finance, recruitment and software development. I have seen how a business runs from the floor, the back office and the boardroom, and these guides are written for the person who has to cover all three.

I spent seven years at Coding Labs as Product Manager and then Executive Board Member, leading product across web and mobile and growing the engineering team by 500 per cent in three years. Before that I ran recruitment as General Manager at 99 Resumes, after technical recruitment leadership at MCS Consulting and Vanarden Mining Oil and Gas. Earlier still I spent six years in commercial finance. I have run teams, hired them, financed them and built the products they use, so the advice here is commercial before it is technical.
