How to Show Up in Google's AI Overviews: What Google Requires, What to Ignore and a Tradie Action List

Jerrell Niu · 28 October 2026 · 10 min read

To appear in Google's AI Overviews, your page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and Google's guide to AI features and your website says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisation needed. That makes AI Overviews part of ordinary SEO and search for Queensland businesses, not a separate product you need to buy.

By Jerrell Niu, who runs search work at I Love Digital for trades across the Gold Coast, Logan, Brisbane and the Tweed border. This guide separates what Google states from agency opinion, including ours.

Key Points

  • Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews, beyond a page being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
  • Your site must also be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible.
  • Google lists llms.txt, chunking content and over-focusing on structured data among the things to ignore, which contradicts a lot of agency advice.
  • Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed and gives no timeline for appearing in AI Overviews.
  • In Pew's March 2025 study of 900 US adults, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without.
  • Search Console Help states its Generative AI performance report has rolled out to all websites worldwide, as at 31 August 2026, and the report combines AI Overviews and AI Mode data.

What is an AI Overview, and do they show in Australia?

An AI Overview is a summary Google writes above the usual results, with links to the pages it drew from. Google Search Help on AI Overviews lists Australia among the countries where they are available to all users, with English a listed language.

Google only shows one when it judges the summary adds something, so many searches never trigger one. Users cannot turn them off, though they can select the Web filter, and Google warns the summaries can make mistakes.

AI Overviews and AI Mode can both use query fan-out, where Google runs several related searches behind the scenes and pulls from pages that answer each part.

The map pack works differently. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so a complete profile helps but cannot change how far you are from the person searching.

Knowing which surface you are chasing stops you paying for the wrong fix.

Three places your business can appear on Google

SurfaceWhat it isWhat gets you in
AI OverviewA summary at the top of results with supporting linksAn indexed, snippet-eligible page that answers the question
AI ModeA separate conversational search modeThe same eligibility as AI Overviews
Map packThe map and local listings for nearby searchesGoogle's local factors of relevance, distance and prominence, where an accurate profile helps relevance and prominence

What does Google actually require, and how long does it take?

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link, and that no special schema.org markup is needed.

Beyond that, Google lists the basics: robots.txt and CDN access, internal links, page experience, text content, images and video, structured data that matches visible text, and up-to-date Merchant Center and Business Profile information. Our SEO checklist for 2026 covers each one step by step.

Google does not say you must rank on page one first. Our opinion is that ranking still matters, because AI Overviews draw on the same index as ordinary search.

On timing, Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed and gives no timeline, so treat any agency promising a set number of weeks with caution. Our guide to how long SEO takes for Gold Coast trades sets realistic expectations.

If your basic SEO is sound, you are already most of the way to being eligible.

Do I need schema, llms.txt or special formatting?

No. The mythbusting section of Google's guide to optimising for generative AI features says to ignore llms.txt, chunking content, rewriting content just for AI, seeking inauthentic mentions and over-focusing on structured data.

That conflicts with plenty of agency advice, including pages that call schema one of the clearest signals. The same logic applies to other assistants, which we cover in our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT.

Skip the gimmicks and you keep your budget for the work Google actually rewards.

Common agency advice versus Google's own guidance

TacticWhat Google saysWhat we do
Schema markupNo special schema is needed, and do not over-focus on structured dataWe add it for ordinary rich results and never sell it as AI work
llms.txt fileIgnore itWe add one to sites we build or manage because it costs next to nothing, but it is a bet on the future, not a reason you appear today
Chunking contentIgnore itWe write normally and put the answer high on the page in plain text
Rewriting just for AIIgnore itWe write for the customer reading on their phone
Seeking mentionsInauthentic mentions are named as something to ignoreWe do not seed or buy mentions

How do I check Search Console, and why am I not appearing?

Start with the settings Google documents, because they are the easiest to rule out. Google's optimisation guide says your site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible, on top of being indexed and snippet-eligible.

Work through these steps in order, with your Search Console login open.

  • Step 1. Open the Settings area of your Search Console property and confirm your site is included in Search generative AI features, because Google lists inclusion as a condition of eligibility.
  • Step 2. Paste the full address of a key service page into the URL Inspection bar at the top of Search Console, and check it reports that the URL is on Google.
  • Step 3. If the page is not on Google, fix the cause the tool reports, such as a noindex tag, then select Request indexing.
  • Step 4. Check that robots.txt or your CDN is not blocking Google, and that the page carries no nosnippet or very low max-snippet setting, because a page must be eligible to show with a snippet.
  • Step 5. Open Performance in the left-hand menu, choose the Generative AI report, then add a Page filter for your service page and set the Date range to the last three months.
  • Step 6. Allow for low volume, because the report may not appear at all if your site has too few impressions or has been excluded from AI features.

What should my service pages and question pages contain?

Google says original, non-commodity content from first-hand experience will likely matter more than any other tip. It also warns that pages written only to match query variations may breach its scaled content abuse policy.

Build each core service page in this order, with the answer in plain text high on the page.

  • Name the service in the heading and first sentence, so a customer knows straight away they are in the right place.
  • List the suburbs you cover, so locals from the Gold Coast to Logan, Brisbane and the Tweed border can see you come to them.
  • Show your licence number and licence class, so customers can check you are allowed to do the job.
  • State your warranty in plain words, because it is one of the last questions people ask before they book.
  • Explain your process from first call to sign-off, so customers know what happens next.
  • Add real photos of your van, your team and finished jobs, because they convince far more than stock images.
  • Give a price range where you can, because cost is the question customers most want answered before they call.

What does a good local question page look like?

A Gold Coast roofer could write 'How much does a storm-damaged roof repair cost, and how fast can you get here?' The page gives a real price range, the suburbs covered, the steps from call to sign-off, the usual storm-season timeframe, the warranty and photos of a finished job.

Show the QBCC licence number and licence class on that page too. Homeowners want to know a roofer is properly licensed before they let anyone on the roof, so show your licence number clearly where they can check it.

Google's own fan-out example is 'how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds', with related searches such as 'best herbicides for lawns' and 'how to prevent weeds in lawn'. A storm repair question fans out the same way into licensing, emergency timing, insurance and warranty, so answer each one on the page.

Keep your name, phone and address identical across your website, Business Profile and directories such as Localsearch, Oneflare and Yellow Pages. Google advises checking your Business Profile for local visibility, and our guide to optimising your Google Business Profile for QLD trades walks you through it.

One honest page like this answers the questions that win the job, however the customer finds you.

Will AI Overviews cost me clicks, and what have we seen locally?

Search Console Help says its Generative AI performance report has rolled out to all websites worldwide, as at 31 August 2026. It combines AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page, country, date and device, and Google cautions about third-party tools claiming 'internal' Google metrics.

Pew Research Center's study of 900 US adults browsing in March 2025 found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.

In that data, 18% of searches produced a summary, rising to 53% for searches of 10 or more words and 60% for searches starting with a question word, against 8% for one- or two-word searches. Google says clicks from pages with AI Overviews have been higher quality but gives no figure.

For trades, Kavera's Sydney test found AI Overviews for 48 of 50 trade questions, all naming at least one trade business, though it says this is not a count of real searches. We have not found equivalent Queensland data.

We will run the monthly check below on Gold Coast and Logan trade questions and add the logged dates, the questions searched and whether an Overview or map pack appeared once they are recorded. Until then this page carries no Queensland counts, because we do not publish numbers we have not logged.

Your own 10-minute monthly check takes one spreadsheet row. Search five real customer questions for your trade and suburb on your phone, then record the date, whether an Overview or map pack appeared, which businesses it named and your Business Profile calls.

Being the business named matters more when fewer people click.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI Overviews show for plumber near me searches? There is no good published data on that yet. Pew's US study did not measure local-intent searches, and 'plumber near me' is three words, so it falls outside the one- or two-word bucket that produced a summary 8% of the time. Search your own short local terms on your phone and note whether an Overview or the map pack appears.

Do I need schema or an llms.txt file to get into AI Overviews? No. Google says no special schema.org markup is needed and lists llms.txt and over-focusing on structured data among the things to ignore.

How long does it take to show up in AI Overviews? Google gives no timeline. It says indexing and serving are not guaranteed, so any fixed number of weeks is a guess rather than a documented figure.

Is AI-written content a risk for my website? It can be if it produces thin pages written only to match search variations. Google says such pages may breach its scaled content abuse policy, and that original content from first-hand experience will likely matter more than any other tip.

Should I buy a GEO or AEO package from an agency? Be cautious. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews and warns about third-party tools claiming 'internal' Google metrics, so ask any agency which of its tactics Google actually supports.
