Google Business Profile Agency or DIY? An Honest Checklist for Gold Coast Trades

Jerrell Niu · 27 October 2026 · 9 min read

Most Gold Coast tradies can run their own Google Business Profile, and a Google Business Profile agency only pays off when you are short on time, stuck on a problem such as a suspension, or competing in a crowded trade. Google's own guidance on working with third parties says the profile is free to use, that third parties often charge a fee, and that learning how it works doesn't take long.

This post is part of our guide to SEO and search for Queensland businesses. It gives you an honest checklist, a split of what to keep and what to hand over, the service-area rules that catch trades out, and a vetting list built from Google's own advice.

Key Points

  • Google says the Business Profile is free to use while third parties often charge a fee, so any agency spend has to be weighed against its return.
  • One published Gold Coast benchmark is Locals Only Marketing's profile management at $497 a month, with a first-month audit included and cancellation on one week's notice.
  • Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, so an agency guaranteeing placement is showing a warning sign Google names itself.
  • Google's local ranking page names relevance, distance and prominence, and does not list weekly posts as a ranking factor.
  • Service-area trades working from home should hide the home address, and Google says the service area should not extend much beyond about two hours' drive from the base.
  • Only profile owners control access, so you should stay the owner and get a written agreement detailing services and costs.

When is doing it yourself enough?

You can manage your own profile if you run a one-to-three-person trade from one base, your listing is verified and you can check your phone between jobs.

Google's tips to improve your local ranking recommend verification, complete and accurate information, replies to reviews and photos. Every one of those is a task an owner can do without paying anyone.

If most of your answers sit in the left column below, keep the money and keep the profile in your own hands.

What should you do yourself, and what is worth outsourcing?

Keep the tasks that need you on the job, and outsource the tasks that need know-how once. You can hire an agency for a one-off audit and setup only, and our Google Business Profile optimisation guide for QLD trades walks through the basics if you want to try first.

Weekly posts and geo-tagged photos are often sold as ranking boosts. Google's local ranking page names relevance, distance and prominence, with prominence drawing on review count, ratings and links to your business, and it does not list posts as a factor.

In our view, a complete and accurate profile is the clearest signal you control for AI answers as well as Google. Our guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT separates what is documented from what is still unknown.

A one-off setup gives you a clean foundation, and you keep the low-cost habits that build your reputation.

  • Take real photos of the van, the team and the finished job, because Google recommends photos and your own show customers who you actually are.
  • Keep your hours accurate yourself, including holiday closures.
  • Outsource a one-off audit that checks your name, categories, service area and description against Google's guidelines.
  • Outsource fixes for suspensions, duplicate listings and verification problems, working through the steps in Google's Business Profile Help centre, because a mistake there can take your listing offline.
  • Outsource the link between your profile and your website, so your service and suburb pages support the listing.

What does an agency cost, and what can it deliver?

Most Gold Coast agency pages don't publish a price. Locals Only Marketing lists its Gold Coast Google profile management at $497 a month, with a first-month audit included and cancellation on one week's notice, and its page does not state whether GST is included.

Setup is claiming and verifying the listing, optimisation is getting every field right once, and ongoing management is the weekly replies, photos, updates and reporting. For a one-to-three-person trade, a monthly plan is worth it only if it frees up billable time or fixes a problem you can't.

Here is what paid work looked like for a Gold Coast smart home installer we worked with. We refreshed their Google review process and built new service and location pages, and the business recorded a 175 per cent increase in phone calls and visits from Google (measurement period and data source to be confirmed before publishing).

For a Gold Coast commercial solar company, the same joined-up approach reached number one on Google for commercial solar on the Gold Coast and top three in the Google Map Pack. DoGood Pet Nutrition put it this way in a five-star Google review, quoted as written: "Jerrell truly knows Google Business Profile inside out and is an expert in building and optimizing websites that perform and scale."

We don't list our own prices, because the right scope depends on your listing, and a free quote will tell you whether you need a setup, ongoing help or nothing at all.

Which Google rules catch Gold Coast trades out?

Many trades work at customers' homes rather than from a shopfront, and Google's guidelines for representing your business are specific about how service-area businesses appear: one profile, and a home address that should be hidden. Breaching them can get a profile suspended, so ask any agency how it will keep your profile within them.

You can't fake distance. To show up in suburbs where you have no premises, build relevance with service and suburb pages on your website, and build prominence with reviews.

Follow these rules and your listing stays live in every suburb you genuinely serve.

  • Hide your home address, because Google gives service-area businesses one profile and its own example is a plumber working from home.
  • List the suburbs and regions you actually travel to, because Google's published limit is distance rather than a suburb count: the service area should not extend much beyond about two hours' drive from your base. A Nerang plumber covering the Tweed, Tamborine Mountain and Logan is fine if they really drive there.
  • Treat a hybrid business carefully if you have a shopfront customers visit and also travel to jobs, because the same guidelines require one profile per business, and any extra location needs its own genuine premises since virtual offices are ineligible.
  • Use your real-world business name, because services, keywords, phone numbers and taglines are not allowed in it. Smith Plumbing is right, and Smith Plumbing Gold Coast Blocked Drains is not.
  • Choose as few categories as possible by typing your trade into the category field in your own profile, whether you are an electrician, plumber or air-conditioning installer, and picking the closest match from the live list.
  • Leave links, prices and promotions out of your description.

How should you handle reviews and after-hours calls?

Reply to every review yourself, including the bad ones, because Google lists review replies in its ranking tips and a reply from the owner reads as genuine.

Handle the tricky ones calmly, and your reviews keep working for you even on a bad week. Our post on asking customers for Google reviews has scripts, timing and the ACCC rules.

  • Answer a negative review once, politely, with the facts and an offer to sort it out by phone, because your reply is written for the next customer who reads it.
  • Report a review that looks fake or comes from a competitor through your profile, following the review-reporting steps in Google's Business Profile Help centre, rather than arguing with it in public.
  • Set your hours to match when someone actually answers the phone, and if you take emergency callouts, make sure your hours and website say so clearly.

How do you vet an agency before you sign?

Vet any agency against the warning signs Google publishes for third parties, and read its own Google reviews before you call. Hold every agency to that standard, including us.

Judge results by the performance figures you are entitled to see, such as calls, direction requests and website clicks. Our guide to how long SEO takes for Gold Coast trades sets realistic expectations on timing.

Ask these questions first and you keep control of the listing customers use to find you.

  • Stay the owner yourself, because only profile owners control access. Add the agency as a manager from your own account and never share your Google password.
  • Ask for a written agreement detailing services and costs, which Google says you should get, and read its term and exit clauses.
  • Ask how you will see performance, because Google says you have the right to see your profile's results.
  • Walk away from guaranteed placement, because Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Even Locals Only Marketing states that no one can guarantee specific rankings on Google.
  • Walk away from anyone claiming to work for Google, making threats or using deceptive pricing, and use one agency at a time, because Google says your business can only appear once on Google.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Google Business Profile agency guarantee me a top three spot? No, nobody can guarantee a top three spot. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking and lists guaranteed placement as a warning sign of a poor provider.

Are lock-in contracts normal for Google Business Profile management? They are not the only option. Locals Only Marketing publishes cancellation on one week's notice, so before signing any agreement, read its term and exit clauses and make sure services and costs are in writing, as Google advises.

Do I keep my Google Business Profile if I leave an agency? Yes, as long as you stay the owner. Google says only profile owners control access, so keep the owner role, add the agency as a manager and remove it when you leave.

Should a tradie hide their home address on Google? Yes, if you work from home and travel to customers. Google says service-area businesses get one profile and should hide a home address, and its own example is a plumber working from home.

Does a strong Google Business Profile help me show up in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews? No platform documents your Business Profile as a ranking input for its answers. In our view, a complete and accurate profile is still the clearest signal you control, and our ChatGPT guide linked above separates what is documented from what is unknown.

How long before I see results from Google Business Profile work? It depends on the state your listing starts in and how crowded your trade is in the suburbs you serve. Our guide to how long SEO takes, linked above, sets out realistic expectations without promising a date.
